Psalm 79-84
New American Standard Bible
Grieving over the Destruction of Jerusalem, and Prayer for Help.
A Psalm of Asaph.
79 God, the (A)nations have [a]invaded (B)Your inheritance;
They have defiled Your (C)holy temple;
They have (D)laid Jerusalem in ruins.
2 They have given the (E)dead bodies of Your servants to the birds of the sky as food,
The flesh of Your godly ones to the animals of the earth.
3 They have poured out their blood like water all around Jerusalem;
And there was (F)no one to bury them.
4 We have become a (G)disgrace before our neighbors,
An object of derision and ridicule to those around us.
5 (H)How long, Lord? Will You be angry forever?
Will Your (I)jealousy (J)burn like fire?
6 (K)Pour out Your wrath upon the nations which (L)do not know You,
And upon the kingdoms which (M)do not call upon Your name.
7 For they have (N)devoured Jacob
And (O)laid waste his [b]settlement.
8 (P)Do not [c]hold us responsible for [d]the guilty deeds of our forefathers;
Let Your compassion come quickly to (Q)meet us,
For we have (R)become very low.
9 (S)Help us, God of our salvation, for the glory of (T)Your name;
And save us and [e](U)forgive our sins (V)for the sake of Your name.
10 (W)Why should the nations say, “Where is their God?”
Let (X)vengeance for the blood of Your servants which has been shed
Be known among the nations in our sight.
11 Let (Y)the groaning of the prisoner come before You;
According to the greatness of Your [f]power, let [g]those who are (Z)doomed to die remain.
12 And return to our neighbors (AA)seven times as much (AB)into their lap
Their (AC)taunts with which they have taunted You, Lord.
13 So we Your people and the (AD)sheep of Your [h]pasture
Will (AE)give thanks to You forever;
To all generations we will (AF)tell of Your praise.
God Implored to Rescue His People from Their Calamities.
For the music director; set to [i]El Shoshannim; [j]Eduth. A Psalm of Asaph.
80 Listen, (AG)Shepherd of Israel,
Who leads (AH)Joseph like a flock;
You who (AI)are enthroned above the cherubim, shine forth!
2 Before (AJ)Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh, (AK)awaken Your power,
And come to save us!
3 God, (AL)restore us
And (AM)make Your face shine upon us, [k]and we will be saved.
4 (AN)Lord God of armies,
(AO)How long will You [l]be angry with the prayer of Your people?
5 You have fed them with the (AP)bread of tears,
And You have made them drink tears in [m]large measure.
6 You make us [n]an object of contention (AQ)to our neighbors,
And our enemies laugh among themselves.
7 God of armies, restore us
And make Your face shine upon us, [o]and we will be saved.
8 You removed a (AR)vine from Egypt;
You (AS)drove out the [p]nations and (AT)planted it.
9 You (AU)cleared the ground before it,
And it (AV)took deep root and filled the land.
10 The mountains were covered with its shadow,
And [q]the cedars of God with its (AW)branches.
11 It was sending out its branches (AX)to the sea
And its shoots to the Euphrates River.
12 Why have You (AY)broken down its [r]hedges,
So that all who pass that way pick its fruit?
13 A boar from the forest (AZ)eats it away,
And whatever moves in the field feeds on it.
14 God of armies, do (BA)turn back;
(BB)Look down from heaven and see, and take care of this vine,
15 The [s](BC)shoot which Your right hand has planted,
And of the [t]son whom You have [u]strengthened for Yourself.
16 It is (BD)burned with fire, it is cut down;
They perish from the (BE)rebuke of Your face.
17 Let (BF)Your hand be upon the man of Your right hand,
Upon the son of man whom You (BG)made strong for Yourself.
18 Then we will not (BH)turn back from You;
(BI)Revive us, and we will call upon Your name.
19 Lord God of armies, (BJ)restore us;
Make Your face shine upon us, [v]and we will be saved.
God’s Goodness and Israel’s Waywardness.
For the music director; [w]on the Gittith. A Psalm of Asaph.
81 (BK)Sing for joy to God our (BL)strength;
Shout (BM)joyfully to the (BN)God of Jacob.
2 Raise a song, strike (BO)the tambourine,
The sweet sounding (BP)lyre with the (BQ)harp.
3 Blow the trumpet at the (BR)new moon,
At the full moon, on our (BS)feast day.
4 For it is a statute for Israel,
An ordinance of the God of Jacob.
5 He established it as a testimony in Joseph
When he [x](BT)went throughout the land of Egypt.
I heard a (BU)language I did not know:
6 “I [y](BV)relieved his shoulder of the burden,
His hands were freed from the [z]basket.
7 You (BW)called in trouble and I rescued you;
I (BX)answered you in the hiding place of thunder;
I put you to the test at the (BY)waters of Meribah. Selah
8 (BZ)Hear, My people, and I will admonish you;
Israel, if you (CA)would listen to Me!
9 There shall be no (CB)strange god among you;
Nor shall you worship a foreign god.
10 (CC)I, the Lord, am your God,
Who brought you up from the land of Egypt;
(CD)Open your mouth wide and I will (CE)fill it.
11 “But My people (CF)did not listen to My voice,
And Israel did not [aa]obey Me.
12 So I (CG)gave [ab]them over to the stubbornness of their heart,
To walk by their own plans.
13 Oh that My people (CH)would listen to Me,
That Israel would (CI)walk in My ways!
14 I would quickly (CJ)subdue their enemies
And (CK)turn My hand against their adversaries.
15 (CL)Those who hate the Lord would (CM)pretend to obey Him,
And their time of punishment would be forever.
16 [ac]But I would feed you with the [ad](CN)finest of the wheat,
And with (CO)honey from the rock I would satisfy you.”
Unjust Judgments Rebuked.
A Psalm of Asaph.
82 God takes His (CP)position in [ae]His assembly;
He (CQ)judges in the midst of the (CR)gods.
2 How long will you (CS)judge unjustly
And (CT)show partiality to the wicked? Selah
3 (CU)Vindicate the weak and fatherless;
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute.
4 (CV)Rescue the weak and needy;
Save them from the hand of the wicked.
5 They (CW)do not know nor do they understand;
They (CX)walk around in darkness;
All the (CY)foundations of the earth are shaken.
6 [af]I (CZ)said, “You are gods,
And all of you are (DA)sons of the Most High.
7 Nevertheless (DB)you will die like men,
And fall like (DC)one of the princes.”
8 (DD)Arise, God, (DE)judge the earth!
For You (DF)possess all the nations.
God Implored to Confound His Enemies.
A Song, a Psalm of Asaph.
83 God, (DG)do not remain quiet;
(DH)Do not be silent and, God, do not be still.
2 For behold, Your enemies (DI)make an uproar,
And (DJ)those who hate You have [ag](DK)exalted themselves.
3 They (DL)make shrewd plans against Your people,
And [ah]conspire together against (DM)Your [ai]treasured ones.
4 They have said, “Come, and (DN)let’s wipe them out [aj]as a nation,
So that the (DO)name of Israel will no longer be remembered.”
5 For they have [ak](DP)conspired together with one mind;
They make a covenant against You:
6 The tents of (DQ)Edom and the (DR)Ishmaelites,
(DS)Moab and the (DT)Hagrites;
7 (DU)Gebal, (DV)Ammon, and (DW)Amalek,
(DX)Philistia with the inhabitants of (DY)Tyre;
8 (DZ)Assyria also has joined them;
They have become [al]a help to the (EA)children of Lot. Selah
9 Deal with them (EB)as with Midian,
As (EC)with Sisera and Jabin at the river of Kishon,
10 Who were destroyed at En-dor,
Who (ED)became like dung for the ground.
11 Make their nobles like (EE)Oreb and Zeeb,
And all their leaders like (EF)Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 Who said, “(EG)Let’s possess for ourselves
The (EH)pastures of God.”
13 My God, make them like the [am](EI)whirling dust,
Like (EJ)chaff before the wind.
14 Like (EK)fire that burns the forest,
And like a flame that (EL)sets the mountains on fire,
15 So pursue them (EM)with Your heavy gale,
And terrify them with Your storm.
16 (EN)Fill their faces with dishonor,
So that they will seek Your name, Lord.
17 May they be (EO)ashamed and dismayed forever,
And may they be humiliated and perish,
18 So that they will (EP)know that (EQ)You alone, whose name is the Lord,
Are the (ER)Most High over all the earth.
Longing for the Temple Worship.
For the music director; [an]on the Gittith. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
84 How lovely are Your (ES)dwelling places,
Lord of armies!
2 My (ET)soul longed and even yearned for the courtyards of the Lord;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the (EU)living God.
3 The bird also has found a house,
And the swallow a nest for herself, where she may put her young:
Your (EV)altars, Lord of armies,
(EW)My King and my God.
4 (EX)Blessed are those who dwell in Your house!
They are (EY)ever praising You. Selah
5 Blessed is the person whose (EZ)strength is in You,
In [ao]whose heart are the (FA)roads to Zion!
6 Passing through the Valley of [ap]Baca they make it a [aq]spring;
The (FB)early rain also covers it with blessings.
7 They (FC)go from strength to strength,
[ar]Every one of them (FD)appears before God in Zion.
8 (FE)Lord God of armies, hear my prayer;
Listen, (FF)God of Jacob! Selah
9 See our (FG)shield, God,
And look at the face of (FH)Your anointed.
10 For (FI)a day in Your courtyards is better than a thousand elsewhere.
I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God
Than live in the tents of wickedness.
11 For the Lord God is (FJ)a sun and (FK)shield;
The Lord gives grace and (FL)glory;
(FM)He withholds no good thing [as]from those who walk with integrity.
12 Lord of armies,
(FN)Blessed is the person who trusts in You!
